Dr Caitlin Vincent is a Lecturer in Creative Industries and the Head of Arts and Cultural Management at the University of Melbourne, where she researches the future of work in the arts. Key areas of expertise include cultural labour, digital performance, and opera. Vincent has co-authored several high-impact industry reports, including The Status of Women in the Arts and Cultural Industries: Research Review 2010-2018 (2018) for the Ontario Arts Council, and The Impact of Australia’s Participation in the Venice Biennale (2019) for the Australia Council for the Arts.
Vincent has also contributed to funded projects commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Arts Centre Melbourne, the Melbourne Fringe Festival, and the Regional Australia Institute, among others. In 2018, she was recruited by Arts Centre Melbourne to serve as an evaluation consultant to lead impact evaluations of internal programs, including the Australian Music Vault.
Vincent’s recent monograph, Digital Scenography in Opera in the Twenty-First Century (Routledge 2021) maps the impacts of digital technology on opera’s production conventions, both on and off the stage. In addition to exploring dramaturgical trends, the monograph discusses the labour dynamics of opera production and the particular disruptions posed by digital technology on creative hierarchies and production design processes. Other active research projects include a longitudinal analysis of women's representation in key creative roles in opera production in the United States and Australia funded by the University of Melbourne and an evaluation of digital innovations implemented by performing arts organisations during COVID-19.
Dr. Vincent is an Affiliate Member of the Centre for People, Organisation and Work at RMIT University. She is also a member of OPERA America’s Women’s Opera Network, the Dramatists Guild of America’s Opera Committee, Victorian Opera’s Peer Review Panel, and the Australian Contemporary Opera Company’s First Take Australia Advisory Panel.
